Mary Helen's Story

I had fun in High School! I got to play sports AND partied too. What fun we had cruising and listening to the Motown sound. I love meeting new people and trying new experiences. I was the second woman to ever work in a steel mill in Arizona (Marathon Steel). What an ordeal that was to even apply for the job! It was a looooong walk past the hooting and hollering just to get to the application office. But it made me face my fears and began the long journey of facing more fears to accomplish the things that I have. It may not seem much to people, but to me, given the circumstances, it is a whole lot. I've hiked the Grand Canyon, North to South Rim. I've hiked the Havasupai Trail also, to the Mooney falls and I have since posted some pictures of that too. That hike was in 1991. I've hiked Picket Post with my Dad and brothers, not as easy as it looks. I love hiking and one day I will be able to again. I worked at the Magma Mine before the last shutdown in 1996. That was the best job I ever had, dirty, but the people made it the best! I'll always cherish that time of my life and feel richer to have experienced the underground. I also have pictures of that time, which I've posted. The worst job I ever had was a tie between a waitress at Coco's and a Land Surveyor in Apache Junction. I am not waitress material! Boy, did I screw that one up. I hated waitressing! And the land surveying? I worked from the end of May until the end of August outdoors in Apache Junction. Out on that blacktop ALL day! Pounding stakes into the ground and marking streets and measuring this and that usually carrying a 20 to 30 pound bag. AND, my boss was the boss from hell too. Whew! I quit that job in a hurry. I was an administrative assistant (secretary) for the Men's physical education department at Mesa Community college in 1974/1975. Of course I jumped at that opportunity. Work for the coaches and see all the sports guys coming and going everyd...Expand for more
ay? HelloooOOOoooo!!! I was also on the women's softball team in 1975 at MCC and we came in 2nd at regionals that year. It gave me great experience and I coached a Sr. girl's softball team in Chandler of which we came in second place. Loved it! I've been raising kids it seems my whole life. I always said I wanted a dozen kids, and I guess it's true; be careful what you wish for. Being the oldest daughter of seven kids gave me much responsibility and I've learned to multi-task and learn to make do with so little. I've adopted my grandchildren, so I have an eighteen, sixteen and nine year old at home (yikes! two teenagers), who keep me young at heart, in mind and body. I am doing it solo too. Talk about challenges! Everyday is a new one. I love them with all my heart. Makes me want to adopt some more too. I love to relax on my patio with a glass of iced tea and watch the sunset or read a good book. Summers are a time for hibernation here. There's no other way to put it unless you have a pool and gallons of sunblock! That is my next house very soon (with a pool and huge patio). My dream home will have a pool, theatre room, exercise room, craft room, den, at least 4 bedrooms, 3 bath, 3 or 4 guest cottages, a pool and cabana, a stream running through the property (with koi fish in it), huge trees, a tree house, and lots of native plants with vivid colors. I'd like the house to be built with adobe, and have a huge porch in front and a huge patio out back. The back of the house will have tall glass windows looking out to the huge flagstone tiled patio and beyond into my backyard paradise. Too many amenities to count, but not a huge house, as I would want it homey and cozy too. As I am NOT a great lover of cooking, I will have to deal with the kitchen issue later....(consult with a culinary student chef and make a deal?, or hire a cook and/or housekeeper) .....more later.... That is all for now, Until next time. Mary Helen
